Line Graph in Microsoft Excel

In this article we will learn how we can make the Line graph in Excel.

Line Graph is used to show trends over time (years, month, and days) or categories in Microsoft Excel 2010 and 2013.

Line Chart contains7 types of line charts. Line chart, Stacked Line, 100% stacked line, Line with Markers, Stacked line with Markers, 100% stacked line with markers, and 3D Line.

Let’s take an example and understand how we can use line chart in excel.

We have month wise achievement data. In which column A contains Month Name and column B contains Achievement.

Let’s see how this is achieved.  To create the line chart follow below givensteps:-

  • Select the data range A1:B13.
  • Go to “Insert” menu on the ribbon, in the  “Charts” group click on “Line Chart”.

  • After inserting the line chart in Excel format 2 contextual tabs will get active. Where you can format and design the chart to make the presentable.

  • Go to the Design contextual tab, and choose any chart from the Chart Styles group.

  • Click on Add Chart Element, drop down list will appear.
  • From the drop down menu click on Data Labels.
  • After clicking on Data labels again drop down will get appear click on center.

If you wanted to add more data in the chart, let’s say we added the targets in column C how we add the data in chart?

To make it double line graph we will add the data in chart.

  • Click on the chart.
  • Right click with the mouse on the chart.
  • You will get a popup from the pop up click on Select Data.

  • Select Data Source dialog box will get appear.
  • Click on the Chart data range tab.

  • Select the range A1:C13, again click on Chart data range tab.

  • Click on ok.
  • The data will add in chart which will appear with the Orange line.

There is 2 another ways to add the data in the chart.

1. Click on the chart, you will see the data will get selected with the colored lines. Just click on blue line with the mouse and hold it and drag it till C13 (End cell of data).

2. Click on the chart 2 contextual tabs will get active in the ribbons. In the Design tab click on Select data in the data group.

a)   Select Data Source dialog box will get appear.

b)   Click on the Chart data range tab.

c)   Select the range A1:C13, again click on Chart data range tab.

d)   Click on ok.

This is the way we can prepare the Line chart and can add the more data in chart.
