How to Remove matching characters in Text in Excel

In this article, we will learn about how to remove matching characters in Text in Excel.
In simple words, while cleaning numbers to get just the numbers and no characters in the cell. We will use SUBSTITUTE function to remove unwanted characters.
The SUBSTITUTE function finds and replaces the text from the cell. Find and Replace text is provided in the formula. Unlike REPLACE function we don’t need to provide the position of the replacement text.

Generic formula

=SUBSTITUTE (text, "char", "")

Text : character to be removed from the text
Char : character to be removed, within quotes
"" : empty string is replaced with char.
Let’s understand this function using it in an example.
Here “-” is removed from the numbers and returns the number with no “-”.
Now we will remove all unwanted characters from the input numbers.
We can use the SUBSTITUTE function inside SUBSTITUTE function multiple times.
Use the formula:


Here 5 SUBSTITUTE functions are used to remove 5 unwanted chars.

  4. [
  5. ]

As you can see the formula removes all the unwanted characters. Hence we get the clean numbers as required.

Note: The SUBSTITUTE function is a case sensitive function.
