Range Name Syntax in Microsoft Excel

MS Excel provides us with many options and functions to create the customized reports and formulas. In this article we are going to teach you, how to use range name in syntax while applying the formula in Microsoft Excel.


Let’s take an example and understand:-

We have a sheet in which we have month wise score details student wise. We just want to return the sum for 4 months.

Now we will create the name range, follow below given steps:-

  • Select the range B2:B11

  • Go to Formulas tab > under the Defined Names group > Click on Define name
  • New Name dialog box will open
  • Enter the Name and range

  • Click OK
  • Follow the same steps for Feb, Mar and Apr month
  • After defining the name all range will appear in Name Manger
  • In the formulas tab > Defined names group > click on Name manager

Now we will learn how to apply range name in formula syntax:-

  • Enter the Sum function in cell B14
  • While entering the function in cell instead of selecting the range type range name

  • Press Enter

In the above image, we can see that syntax is showing the range name, sum of the months number are also correct. In this way we use range name as syntax in Microsoft Excel.
