# Summing Using Text Characters as Criteria

SUMIF function is used to add the numbers in a range on the basis of specific criteria.

Let’s take an example to understand how we can sum the text character as criteria.

We have data in range A1:B11. Column A contains the list of Sales persons, and Column B contains sales amount. We want to return the total value for agent only.

• Select the cell C2.
• Write the formula =SUMIF(A:A,"Agent",B:B)
• Press Enter on your keyboard.
• The function will return the total value to Agent.

Let’s take another example

We have data in range A1:B11. Column A contains the list of Sales persons and Column B contains sales amount.

In the above-shown example, we want to return the total amount for all agents, in cell C2.

Follow below given steps and formula:-

• Select the cell C2.
• Write the formula =SUMIF(A:A,"Agent*",B:B)
• Press enter on your keyboard.
• The function will return the total value to Agents.
