Re: Excel stops responding with any macro - Win XP Home
Tom,
BTW your reply is set to you only not the list.
I have the impression, not definite but I felt it that a XL97 book, that
has references set in the VBE, works when it goes to an XP environment.
But if the workbook is saved in the XP environment it relinks & keeps
the references to the later XP version (because XP is helpful like
that), but then the spreadsheet when it goes back to 97 can't use those
references & can't relink them as it doesn't know how to.
In fact I've just tried it, by taking a workbook that had DAO 3.5 & ADO
2.1 referenced in XL97, when opened in Excel XP it had only ADO 2.7
referenced, not DAO at all. Therefore if I saved it would have unknown
(to 97) references & that sometimes gives instability.
Check what references you have in 97 & then see what you get in XP on
opening & saving, then recheck in 97. Use the shift key when opening in
case some autopen macro is confused by the bad/dodgy references.
(You'll probably reply now & say you don't have any references set ;))
HTH
Keith

Subject: FW: Excel stops responding with any macro - Win XP Home
For months I have been trying to solve this problem, and anyone that
could give me the slightest clue would be most appreciated.
I have a large workbook in use by about 100 outside salespeople that
works great unless the person is using Win XP Home. These people can
open and run it just fine, but once the workbook is saved on their
machine there is a problem. When the workbook is re-opened, Excel will
stop responding when any Macro is run. There is no message; just an
hourglass, and Ctrl-Alt-Del is the only solution. Although I'd thought
this was just a Win XP Home problem, I just had two new users report the
problem under XP Pro.
If the XP-Home user e-mails the problem file to another system running
Win 98, ME, 2000 or (usually) XP Pro it can be opened by them and all
the Macros work. When the file is re-saved and sent back to the XP-Home
user, he can open it and execute all the Macros. But, if he saves the
file, the problem is back when he re-opens. The version of office
doesn't seem to matter; Office 97,2K and XP are all being used
successfully, but have the problem if run with XP Home. It would appear
that something is not getting saved on the problem systems.
The workbook has dozens of macros, check-boxes, controls, etc. Pretty
much the whole gamut.
Again, even the slightest idea or clue would be valuable!
Thanks in advance,
Tom
